Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD) is a leading institution of reference in the Portuguese financial system and is the largest bank in Portugal. CGD is ranked the 77th most valuable financial brand in the world according to a report published by Brand Finance. It is ranked above other banking brands such as Scottish Widows, Bank of Scotland, Western Union, Caja Madrid and Abbey.

Banco Comercial Portugues SA (Millennium BCP; Portuguese Commercial Bank) is the largest private bank in the country, founded in 1985. The Bank has a private banking platform in Switzerland, which plays an important role in the Private Banking and Asset Management business area, providing a service to Group's Customers in Portugal, Poland, Greece and other countries. "The Banker" magazine awarded Millennium bcp Portuguese "Bank of the Year". The magazine also ranked Millennium bcp as the largest bank in Portugal and it is ranked 105th in "The Banker"'s annual list of the 1000 largest banks in the world.

Banco Espírito Santo (BES) is one of Portugal's largest banks, founded in 1920. It is listed on the Euronext 100 index. It has an extensive international network spanning North American and Asian countries. In 2008 BES Group was the world’s 5th largest financer of investment projects in renewable energies. Recognition of these activities has taken the form of numerous prizes and awards, including the “Deal of the Year 2007” award for the financing of the renewable energies project of Babcock & Brown Wind Partners.
