Top Banks in Sri Lanka

The top leading banks in Sri Lanka are the Commercial Bank of Ceylon Limited, HSBC Sri Lanka, ICICI Bank, Hatton National Bank PLC, Sampath Bank, Citi Sri Lanka, among others.

The Commercial Bank of Ceylon is the first Sri Lankan bank to be ranked among the Top 1000 Banks of the World based on capital adequacy and soundness. In addition, Commercial Bank was adjudged as Sri Lanka's Best Bank by Global Finance (USA), one of the world's most respected financial publications. The Bank was also adjudged Sri Lanka's "Bank of the year 2008" for the seventh time by "The Banker" Magazine.

HSBC commenced business operations in Sri Lanka in 1892, offering a broad range of financial services to customers locally and internationally. HSBC Sri Lanka was named by Global Finance as country winner for 'Best Consumer Internet Banks' for Asia in 2006, country winner for both 'Best Consumer Internet Banks' and 'Best Corporate/Institutional Internet Banks' for Asia in 2008, and again country winner for 'Best Consumer Internet Banks' for Asia in 2010.

ICICI Bank commenced banking operations in Sri Lanka through a branch office in January, 2006, with the approval of the Monetary Board of Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) under the Banking Act of 1988. ICICI Bank has been ranked 45th among the top 100 most valuable brands across all brand categories in the Brandz Top 100 Global Brands Report in 2010.

Hatton National Bank PLC (HNB) was placed among the Top 10 Best Corporate Citizens of Sri Lanka, identified by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce at the Best Corporate Citizen Awards. HNB was amongst the first few local corporates to lead the cause for environment conservation activities.

Sampath Bank won a Gold and a Merit Award at the National Best Quality Software Awards 2008 for the in-house category for developing the 'Credit Approval System (CAS)' and 'Electronic Money Transfer (EMTS)' application. In 2009 it became the third largest private sector bank in Sri Lanka in terms of total assets.

Citi offers a full range of financial products and services to corporate clients from its branch in Colombo. Since its establishment in 1979, Citi Sri Lanka has led local market innovation in terms of cash management solutions, trade financing, corporate finance, and risk management and hedging. The Bank has been rated "AAA" by Fitch Ratings Lanka.
