Stanbic Bank (Uganda) Limited (SBU) is the largest commercial bank in the country, by assets, with an estimated asset valuation of US$991 million, accounting for about 23% of the total bank assets in Uganda, as of June 2010. It is subsidiary of the Standard Bank Group.

The Bank of Uganda (BoU) is the Central Bank of the Republic of Uganda. It conducts all its activities in close association with the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development(MoFPED). The Bank's core activities include: Issuance of Uganda's national currency/legal tender, the Uganda Shilling (UGX); Regulation of money supply through Monetary Policy; Supervision and regulation of Financial Institutions; etc.

Barclays operations in Uganda started in 1927. In 1969, it was incorporated as an independent subsidiary of the Barclays PLC. In February 2007, Barclays completed the acquisition of Nile Bank Uganda Limited, strengthening its presence in the country. It offers banking products and services to individual and corporate customers, including a range of savings accounts developed for people on low incomes.

DFCU Bank is one of the largest banks in Uganda in terms of assets. It was established in 1964 as a development finance institution. In 2000, the company bought Gold Trust Bank and started commercial banking and renamed it DFCU Bank.
